Serial communication without max232

I have both Pin2 and Pin6 connected to ground now through. They're not connected directly though, there's a wire from ground to the pin's row, and then a cap with both leads in that row. That should still work, right? The caps are too small to connect to ground directly. Unfortunately no, I was just wondering how it would be used. So you could see if the caps are filling up properly?

So that's good. Except that it is very different from the original MAX So can you post a picture of your setup, or schematics or anything - we cannot tell if you have wired it correctly, you just have provided some images you think you have followed correctly. Well there's the problem! Sparkfun sent me an H-driver instead of a MAX I didn't bother looking at the label on the IC, but I definitely will from now on Connecting pin 2 to GND with a capacitor will fry the chip. This is because driving pin 2 more than 0.

More recent versions MAY have some protection against this but I doubt it. Yet another home page. Skip to main content. MAX no working, what are some common problems? In few transmissions where handshaking is not used, the receiver DCE should read the data that is already received by it before the transmitter DTE sends the next data.

The receiver needs to use a special memory location called Buffer, as it is used at the end of the receiver it is known as Receiver Buffer. The received data gets stored in the buffer before it is read by the receiver. The Receiver Buffer can usually store a single bit of data and this data must be read before the next data arrives and if it is not cleared, the present data will be overwritten along with the new data. Types of Handshaking. The transmitter will transmit the data and it is loaded into the receiver buffer.

This is the time, the receiver tells the transmitter not to send any further data until the data in the buffer has been read by the receiver. The RS Protocol refers to four signals for the use of Handshaking:. Software Handshaking in RS needs two characters to start and end the communication. When the receiver sends an X-OFF signal, the transmitter stops sending the data. The transmitter will only send data after receiving the X-ON signal.

Step by Step Tutorial. The voltage levels of RS are very different from most of the systems designed in the recent times.

Therefore, we require a level converter of some kind to implement RS interface. These ICs also invert the signals as low voltage levels in RS The entire system of communication mentioned in this example is of asynchronous type and it requires start, stop and parity bits which are also called as synchronization bits. The UART in the example is responsible for generating the Start, Stop and Parity bits when it transmits the data and also detects errors while receiving data.

In case of a computer and modem, the Computer and Modem communicate with each other using the RS interface and the communication between the modems is established using other telecommunication links. Some additional applications of RS are as follow. Your email address will not be published. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Notify me of new posts by email. Table of Contents. Electrical Technology 1 9 minutes read. This IC is very useful while making a connection between two devices to transfer the data.

If we want to send the data from the microcontroller to a personal computer then we require changing data to Rs level from TTL. The highest distance it can transmit data ranges from 12 — 15 meters. So this IC is applicable in terminals, modems, computers, scanners, printers, fax machines, etc. The following circuit is applicable for microcontrollers.

But it seems that they are not critical to max operation but … I don't know, only provide extra stability? And yet with all my tests I never observed corrupt data transfer so I wonder what kind of interference do the caps actually protect from, what would the drawbacks be if I continue to use this setup with no caps at all?

PS: Since I didn't expect max to work without caps, at first I thought that I was mistaken and that I was observing some local echo at the terminal.
