SciTE is a syntax highlighting editor that uses the open source Scintilla editor library. Platforms supported include Windows and Linux. The program is open source. The IDE is extensible via plugins. The editor works on Windows, Mac and Linux. AkelPad is a simple Notepad replacement with support for multiple documents, editing of files larger than the Notepad limit of 64K, Unicode, multi-level undo, search and replace operations, column text selection, etc. Plugins for the editor include syntax highlighting facilities, auto-completion, keyboard macros, script execution, etc.
This is an open source editor for Windows. CUTE is a text editor that is extensible using Python. Binaries executables are available for Linux. The source code is released under the GPL. It also has an integrated debugger gdb , application wizards to create GTK, GNOME and terminal applications, dynamic tags browsing, project management, etc. It comes with source code. It has a syntax highlighting editor which you can customize and it also allows you to debug your Perl scripts from within the IDE for example, you can insert breakpoints, view and edit variables, etc.

The program is no longer being maintained and has not been updated since Yudit is a Unicode text editor for Linux that has direct True Type support. The website claims that you can easily edit Unicode text without having to learn a new keybinding.
UTF-8 is its default encoding. It handles large files, has multiple levels of UNDO, support for an external spell checker, regular expression searching, support for executing a compiler, etc. Besides main freehand drawing tools, some other handy tools like clone tool , freehand selection , rectangle generic , ellipse generic , etc.
If you further want to modify the freehand art, then use menus like modify , view , and edit. To change the density of text in the art, you can vary parameters including highlights , shadows , gamma , and sharpen.
Batch conversion and art resizing tools can also be found this section. In this freeware, you also get some filter presets along with a filter slider to vary the intensity of texts used in the ASCII art. If you choose median or upper intensity cut off filter , then the output art would be made of tightly packed texts.
However, use of lower intensity cutoff filter makes output art less congested, as art would contain much fewer texts than other filter configurations. To vary art size, you can either enter pixel width and height value or enter height and width values in percentage. According to your choice, you can select different character sets and numbers that you want in the output ASCII art. Various types of fonts and option to vary font size are also available on the interface. There is a small outright difference between the two algorithms: M-Rules mostly uses alphabets to generate the art whereas Noise algorithm mainly uses numbers to do the same.
Inbuilt file compressor is another useful feature using which you can compress the art before saving it. Once done, preview the image by pressing the convert image button. Besides ASCII art , this freeware is also capable to generate word art , text mosaic , text art , crazy characters , and draw lines art from the input image. On its interface, you get separate preview windows for each type of supported art. Separate settings sections for each art type is also present on the left side of the interface.
Plus, additional tools settings are also present using which you can change text font , text color , background color , brightness , saturation , etc.
Now, to save the art, go to its art section and save art in one of the various file formats namely, JPG , metafile. Note : In this free version, some of its advanced features will disable after a grace period of few days. To enjoy all of its features, you need to buy this software. By default, it uses a string of random texts in the ASCII art, but you can also set your own string from the set character string option.
Besides this, you can resize the art by entering the X and Y scale values. Here, you do not have the option to preview the output art so first, save the art in TXT format and then view it. This freeware does its job, but it also has some drawbacks such as only three supported input image formats , only one supported output format , and no preview window. In this software, you get various types of art fonts in font drop down menu such as alphabet , banner , alligator , calligraphy , etc.
